One example: isosteviol combined with duloxetine suppressed Roseburia intestinalis and Parabacteroides merdae. The work was published in Molecular Systems Biology.

Separately, a narrative review in Nutrients covered eight artificial sweetener categories: saccharin, cyclamate, aspartame, acesulfame K, sucralose, neotame, neohesperidin DC, and mixed exposures. Its stated conclusion: "Current research evidence does not support a class-wide conclusion that NAS are uniformly harmful or safe."

Taken together, effects appear to be compound specific and dose specific rather than a property of sweeteners as a class.

What this does not show

  • That sweeteners damage the human gut. The Cambridge screen is in vitro. Growth changes in lab cultures are not health outcomes in people, and the study's own release says so directly.
