Twenty four healthy adults took nitrate rich or nitrate stripped beetroot, with and without caffeine. Caffeine alone raised two measures of arterial stiffness. Taken together with the nitrate rich drink, those measures sat at placebo levels.

A critical review of exercise, redox balance and ageing finds the popular idea of pairing compounds such as astaxanthin, curcumin or sulforaphane with training is not supported by current clinical evidence. Almost all the encouraging work sits in cell culture and rodent models, with very little human data in older populations.

Muscle biopsies from 107 women aged 19 to 70 show that the main estrogen receptor in skeletal muscle is about half as abundant in the oldest group as in the youngest, and that receptor levels track proteins governing nitric oxide and oxidative balance. Everything measured here is protein abundance. No oxidative stress outcome and no muscle function outcome was measured at all.

In a 12 week randomised trial, men from couples with recurrent pregnancy loss who took alpha lipoic acid ended with lower sperm DNA fragmentation than those on placebo. Conventional semen measures did not separate the groups, and nobody tracked whether a pregnancy followed.

Trained men lifted twice a week for three months, half of them sitting in cold water after every session. Redox gene expression and mitochondrial enzyme activity rose the same amount in both groups.

Pooling 14 randomised trials of oral antioxidants in IVF and ICSI, researchers found higher clinical pregnancy rates and more mature eggs collected. The live birth signal came from just three trials and disappeared when one of them was removed.

Polylactic acid, the compostable plastic used in food packaging, sheds nanoparticles when hot water is added to powdered food. Combined with the silica already in those powders, it damaged mouse liver and gut more than either did alone, and transplant experiments traced part of that damage to the loss of Lactobacillus.

In a human gut cell monolayer, two commercial yogurt starter strains reduced how much polystyrene nanoplastic was taken into the cells and how much passed through to the other side. The team tested whether the particles were sticking to the bacteria, found they were not, and reported it.
